Imphal, August 11 (SNS): Amid the demand for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census, Chief Minister of Manipur met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and urged him to convene a special session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

The Chief Minister met the Governor at around 10:30 a.m. and held discussions on various issues concerning the state. The meeting came amid growing demands from civil society organisations and student bodies for the NRC to be updated before the Census.

Meanwhile, a Cabinet meeting held recently decided to increase incentives for medal winners at the Commonwealth Games. The incentive for a gold medal has reportedly been increased to ₹20 lakh, while silver medalists will receive ₹15 lakh and bronze medalists ₹10 lakh. Incentives for other participants have also been approved.

The Cabinet also approved several other proposals, including measures concerning government medical services and other state matters.

JFD Continues Campaign Against Census Before NRC

The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has continued its agitation demanding that the NRC be updated before the Census. Various student and civil society groups have joined the campaign.

The campaign has included demonstrations and awareness programmes in different parts of the state. Participants have raised slogans such as “No NRC, No Census” and demanded that the government complete the NRC process before conducting the Census.

The organisations have also expressed concern that conducting the Census without first updating the NRC could have serious implications for Manipur.

The report states that the Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) has also opposed conducting the Census in the state without addressing the NRC issue. TIM has reportedly expressed its position through various programmes and public campaigns.

The JFD and several civil society organisations have continued to organise programmes involving students and the public. Demonstrations and awareness campaigns have been conducted at different locations, including educational institutions.

A recent consultative meeting involving the government and civil society organisations was also referred to during the campaign. The organisations maintained that the NRC should be updated before the Census is conducted.

The report further states that seminars and public programmes are being organised to create awareness about the issue, with student organisations and civil society groups urging the government to take action on the NRC demand.
